Geography of Grace

First Row (Left to Right): Marion Aldridge, Eva Marie Everson, Cuttino Alexander, Sara Olson Dean Second Row: Elaine Maust, Sam Wright, Leah Horton, Martha Postlethwaite, Robert Fugarino, Elizabeth Henry, Beth Foose, Becky Youngblood, Robert Benson (workshop facilitator).

From September 27 – October 3, 2017, a group of pastors and faith leaders met at the Gray Center in Canton, Mississippi for the fall Collegeville Institute writing workshop Mapping the Geography of Grace: A Writing Workshop for Clergy. The workshop featured teaching sessions with noted author Robert Benson, time for writing, and gatherings for reading and responding to the work of others in the group.

The best part of the workshop, according to one participant, was connecting with other clergy who are writing. The time away to write, the ability to build relationships and networks, and the excellent collegiality of and conversation among the group were also mentioned as highlights.

When asked to provide feedback on workshop facilitator Robert Benson, one participated wrote that he “was just exactly the leader I needed. His mix of humor and kindness, his self-awareness about his own journey of writing, his openness about his story and especially his encouragement gave me hope and the impetus to continue along this very new path.”
