Emerging Writers Mentorship Program kicks off for 2022-2023 September 26, 2022 By Collegeville Institute Leave a Comment The Collegeville Institute’s Emerging Writers Mentorship Program launched on Monday, September 19 with a four-day writing workshop experience. Graciously hosted by the Saint John’s Abbey Guesthouse, the group enjoyed group instruction and discussion, one-on-one meetings between participants and their assigned writing mentor and coach, communal meals, and a game night. Yet this four-day experience was just the start. The Program consists of two writing coaches, Patrice Gopo and Michael N. McGregor, and six participants, chosen for their skill and interest in writing about religious or spiritual topics. Patrice and Michael bring a wealth of writing expertise to the program. Patrice has written multiple award-winning essays and radio commentaries, focusing on issues of race, immigration, and belonging. She is the author of two books, All the Colors We Will See, and All the Places We Call Home. Michael is an award-winning professor and the former director of the MFA in Creative Writing program at Portland State University. His essays, articles and stories have been published widely, and he is the author of Pure Act: The Uncommon Life of Robert Lax. Following the workshop, the program will continue for 8 months, with participants completing three essays that will be published on Bearings Online, the Collegeville Institute’s online publication. The Emerging Writers Mentorship Program participants and writing coaches pose on the terrace of the Abbey Guesthouse, overlooking Lake Sagatagan on the Saint John’s University campus. Throughout the program, writer participants will receive direct feedback and instruction on specific writing techniques as their coaches meet with them virtually 3 to 4 times over the course of writing each essay. In addition, the whole group will meet virtually on three occasions to provide more instruction and facilitate further conversations and connections building on the foundation of the beginning workshop.
