Fall 2013 Resident Scholars Make the News October 31, 2013 By Collegeville Institute Leave a Comment Over the course of each academic year, a talented group of artists, academics, journalists, pastors, and other professionals make the Collegeville Institute their home. Some of these participants in the resident scholars program stay for a few weeks, others for a full semester or two. Whatever else they plan to accomplish during their time at the Institute, most of these folks come to write. They come to write not just treatises intended for specialists in a particular field; they also come to write pieces from the heart, intended for broad audiences, about what it means to be human from the vantage point of faith. Kudos to three current Collegeville Institute resident scholars for recently publishing just this sort of work, in print and online: The September 28 issues of Commonweal magazine includes a piece by Mary Frances Coady, a writer and professor from Ryerson University. “Desert Hospitality” describes Mary Frances’ tour of the Wadi Rum in southern Jordan alongside her captivating Bedouin guide. Inspired by conversations at the Collegeville Institute about the commodification of the writing life, Jenell Paris, an anthropologist from Messiah College, recently published an op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, with the provocative title, “I am Miley Cyrus: It’s worth asking how much each of us has become a commodity.” Visit the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to read the full piece: http://www.post-gazette.com/Op-Ed/2013/10/20/I-am-Miley-Cyrus/stories/201310200279 Tom Montgomery Fate, an English professor at College of DuPage and a short-term scholar the Collegeville Institute, published a review of Gilead by Marilynne Robinson in the Chicago Tribune in July. Even though Gilead was published nearly a decade ago, Tom brings fresh insights to bear on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by reflecting on the role of small-town pastors and the life of his recently deceased father.
