An Introduction to the Catholic Epistles of the New Testament

This scientific book provides some basic information about seven epistles of the New Testament canon, which have often been called the Catholic or General Epistles. While 1-3 John, 1-2 Peter, James and Jude were all known at an early period in the history of the Church, Eusebius of Caesarea in the early 4th century CE was the first to explicitly group these seven epistles as “the Epistles called Catholic” of Catholic Epistles. Written at various times and locations and to differing audiences, the Catholic epistles nevertheless share some common themes: endurance under persecution; living out the faith in a hostile society; discerning heresy; holding fast to the apostolic faith. They seem to speak to the Christian church in general, rather than to individual churches.

The scientific book is written by three different biblical scholars from Slovakia. It addresses introductory issues: authorship, date, genre, recipients, text, canonicity, historical and cultural background, outline and theological message of each epistle.
