Listen to Dr. Cheryl Kirk-Duggan read her poem, “What Was?”
What was—
Does it really matter?
What was, is no longer
as the past can never return
in the same shape, form, or fashion.
Once a moment occurs—
It disappears, is no more.
And, when we get stuck on repeat,
Delusions. Addictions to our
paranoia of paralysis
making us in absentia, for the gift of now,
for the present
As if playing games of high stakes poker blind-folded.
We wear the masks of
Disrupted delusions; arrested development
Fear and trepidation; frenzied angst
Distraught solitude, damaged vision
Intellectual stagnation, inflamed intellect
Distorted pride—
Because was cannot be legitimated
As a tactic to be forever absent,
in critical moments of thoughtful decision making
For we forgot to laugh
And play, and be in this moment,
for NOW is all there is!
