Our blog series on writing and the life of faith continues this week with an interview with Rev. Karen Hering. Karen is a chaplain, consulting literary minister, and author of Writing to Wake the Soul: Opening the Sacred Conversation Within, a book about the spiritual practice of writing. This summer, Karen joins our team of writing workshop facilitators at the Collegeville Institute. Acknowledging the tradition of writing as a spiritual practice, Karen has developed a model of writing called “contemplative correspondence,” which is designed to help people pay attention to their own lives and to connect their experience to larger meaning and other people. Karen describes this spiritual practice of writing as our creative participation in a universe still unfolding.
In this video interview, Karen describes how writing can awaken our souls, give expression to our souls’ voices, help us reclaim our religious heritages, and draw us into communion with others. The video is divided into three sections, outlined below:
Asleep at the Switch (00:07)
Writing to Wake the Soul (01:36)
Words that Merit Attention (02:32)
