I hear them now
Across the morning
Making their plaintiff
unnamable noise.
Electric, vibrating
Against my soul
Across the tree tops.
At the end of their
Long journey
Up from the earth-womb
Over bark
And ruin
Slash and vine
Until they reach
The perch
From which they
Call to their love
In a secret language
The cicada song.
