Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly. ― Chuang Tzu
Joe was on a respirator
for three months.
Who would’ve believed
he’d be on a cruise now,
sight-seeing in the Bahamas.
Only his wife Kathy,
who kept saying she had every
expectation he’d come home.
Definitely not me, who rehearsed
condolences, considered
what food I should bring.
The older I get, the more I wonder
if it’s saner to be the caterpillar,
certain that the world is ending.
Or if it makes more sense
to wait calmly in the cocoon
until I am surprised by wings.
