Matthew D. Bates, Jr., Ph. D., is the Senior Minister at Centenary United Methodist Church, Richmond, Va. He attended the summer 2014 writing workshop, Awakening Theological Imagination in the Congregation: A Spiritual Practice of Writing with Karen Hering.
