Stories We Live

“Christian vocation,” says Kathleen Cahalan, “is about connecting our stories with God’s story.” That is the basis for The Stories We Live, in which Cahalan rejuvenates and transforms vocation from a static concept to a living, dynamic reality.

Drawing from biblical narratives, her own experience, and the personal stories of others, Cahalan discusses how each of us is called by God, to follow, as I am, from grief, for service, in suffering, through others, within God. The various callings that we receive throughout life ground our identity in relationship to others and to God. Readers of this book will come away with a renewed vision for what they do and who they are.

The Stories We Live offers a fresh framework for considering God’s call. It introduces new vocabulary for vocation through eight prepositions that show how we are called—by God, to follow, as we are, from loss, for service, in suffering, through others, and within God.

This wise and beautifully written book is a splendid resource both for personal reflection and for discussion in reading groups and among friends. It is a gift to be shared.”

— Craig Dykstra, Duke Divinity School

“Through stories of real people responding to God’s call in their lives, Kathleen Cahalan invites readers into a series of reflections that are both spiritually sensitive and theologically rich, demonstrating again that she is one of the most important voices speaking about vocation today.”

— Edward P. Hahnenberg author of Awakening Vocation: A Theology of Christian Call

“Reading this engaging book, and pondering it alone or with others, can help each of us to hear and respond to God’s calling, wherever we may be on life’s journey.”

— Dorothy Bass, Valparaiso University
